Young Inspirations

Aaron and Nana Leena

Fakalofa lahi atu, and warm greetings everyone.

I recently enjoyed a break in the Big Smoke to spend time with my family. After all the excitement of publishing Doorway of Death some relaxation was in order. Holding the first copy in my hands was an incredible buzz after so many years of labour, however encouraging the younger generation gives me even greater satisfaction.

Doorway of Death is not a children’s book, but my grandson Aaron – nearly ten – has observed some of the journey in its creation and seen the realisation of my dream. When I arrived at his home he had a list of questions already prepared and shared his own dream of becoming a writer.

“What’s the easiest genre to write in?” he asked first.

“That’s a great question,” I told him. “The easiest genre to write is the one you love to read.”

My answer made him smile. He’s another fantasy fan, and had already begun a story along those lines.

Over the week his questions kept coming and I enjoyed his delight when he read me sections of his story. We talked about plot, character development, and keeping a record of what characters looked like – so they didn’t unexpectedly change hair or eye colour (unless it was part of the plot).

Sarvarna’s Masterpiece

I have also written and illustrated two children’s books – fantasy of course – about Fern, a Tree Baby. These books have fascinated my young readers, and recently brother Jon phoned with questions from his granddaughter, Sarvarna. The eight-year-old wanted to know more about the process I had followed to create the images.

What a joy it was when later Messenger provided me with a series of photos from Sarvarna: scenes she had crafted to illustrate a wee story she had written.

Nothing can compare with the joy and privilege of inspiring young minds and hearts on their own creative journey.

During my time away we celebrated the 21st birthday of my granddaughter, Kat. Friends and family came from afar to enjoy her special day – and enjoy the fabulous food, especially that from the umu, and sing until midnight! The family/fanau is at the heart of all my stories just as it is at the heart of my life.

Enjoy all the moments you have with your own family as we journey through these uncertain days.

Ngā mihi nui.

  1. Lovely Leena that you are inspiring the youngsters. Wouldn’t it be great to have more writers in the family.

An inspiration to more than just the little ones in your family, Leena!
